A new game for the nostalgic Atari Jaguar is set to be released in 2026. American game publisher Songbird Productions announced on its official X account (link) that the new title, “Shape Shooter 2000,” will launch in 2026.
The Atari Jaguar was a console released by Atari in 1993 (1994 in Japan), famously known for its lion’s roar at startup.
It hosted numerous notable titles, including the ported classics “Wolfenstein 3D” and “Doom,” as well as games like “Alien vs Predator,” where players could control marines with different abilities or play as a predator/alien, and immersive shooters such as “Tempest 2000.” In 1995, the console also introduced a CD-ROM drive. The game “Virtual Light Machine,” created by genius developer Jeff Minter, gained attention for its psychedelic graphics that changed in rhythm with music.

The newly announced “Shape Shooter 2000” is a shooting game featuring 3D graphics. According to the official X post, it’s described as a retro shooter set in a futuristic past, where players must defeat countless enemies attacking from all directions using shots and a bomb ability that can push back incoming attacks. Power-ups such as armor that increases durability despite taking hits, or shot range upgrades will enhance the player’s craft. With limited field area, the game promises intense, fast-paced gameplay.

Songbird Productions, established in 1999, is an American publisher and developer known for reviving classic titles such as “Atari Karts,” porting Amiga games like “Wings of Death” to the Atari Jaguar, and producing accessories such as the Atari Jaguar video output adapter “JagAIOA.” The company accepts international orders (link), suggesting purchases from Japan are possible.
In recent years, new games for retro consoles have become increasingly common. As long as there are fans who cherish them, a console’s “lifespan” never truly ends. With this new release coming 32 years after the original launch, Atari Jaguar enthusiasts will undoubtedly welcome it with joy.
