On September 25, 2025, during the Tokyo Game Show 2025 held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba Prefecture, Electronic Arts hosted a joint media interview with the development team behind Battlefield 6, set to release on October 10 (PC link / PS5 link / Xbox Series X|S link). Attendees included Byron Beede, General Manager of the Battlefield series, and five other development leads.
The first question asked whether the team had specific expectations for Japanese FPS players, given that Battlefield 6 is the series’ return to TGS after a decade.
The developers emphasized that regions including Japan are critically important markets and expressed their joy at being back at TGS. Several years ago, they engaged in extensive discussions with fans worldwide—including those from Japan—about what players expect from the next Battlefield, and about what truly defines the essence of the franchise. These insights led to the creation of “Battlefield Labs.” Feedback gathered through this initiative was incorporated across multiple aspects including gameplay, modes, and design. Furthermore, during open beta testing, they received feedback from millions of players.
The team revealed that TGS participation had been planned early on. They emphasized their dedication by detailing plans for a large-scale booth, with both multiplayer maps and the single-player campaign making their world premieres at this event.
Next came the question: “In an increasingly competitive market for high-skill FPS games, how does Battlefield 6 differentiate itself?”
The developers explained that the Battlefield series is one of the most renowned FPS franchises globally. Elements such as combat design, weapon systems, and class mechanics are highly distinctive—offering experiences unique to this franchise. At the same time, they acknowledged the growing demand for competitive features and stated they constantly consider how best to expand them. However, their fundamental principle remains building alongside players. Through “Battlefield Labs,” they aim to validate what players want and shape a competitive experience that is truly authentic to Battlefield.
When asked whether there are initiatives to attract new players, despite the large fan base from earlier titles, the team confirmed that they remain committed to delivering core Battlefield experiences such as full-scale warfare. Even when integrating mechanics borrowed from other games, they emphasize preserving the franchise’s DNA.
As examples, they cited squad deathmatch modes based on class concepts, single-player campaigns with adjustable difficulty levels, and an “Initiation Mode” allowing players to watch bot matches—making it accessible for newcomers who can learn while enjoying gameplay. Additionally, Battlefield Portal enables players to create their own content, including practice sessions for operating helicopters or fighter jets.
They also highlighted that understanding each class’s role naturally allows players to contribute meaningfully to the team—for instance, support classes distributing crates to aid allies, or scouts using gunfire to reveal enemy positions even without a kill.
Regarding the question about weapon restrictions per class, the team confirmed that all weapons are available to every class. However, each class is designed with specific advantages when using certain weapons.
Their ultimate goal is a game where players can fight freely, so they chose not to impose weapon limitations in this release.
When asked how they analyzed Battlefield 2042’s shortcomings and applied those lessons to the current title, the team stressed that “working alongside players” has always been vital for the franchise. For Battlefield 6, they emphasized a strict cycle of listening to player feedback, implementing changes based on it, and continuing to gather input.
They also reflected that returning to three core pillars—Class Identity, Destruction Presentation, and Team Play—was key to regaining trust by staying true to the series’ essence.
They also recognized the importance of diversifying player experiences and allowing individual interpretations, which led to greater focus on narrative credibility and a wide variety of game modes.
On the topic of physics-based destruction—once popular in past titles—the team clarified that while tactical destruction and freedom remain important, exaggerated or unrealistic behaviors have been toned down. However, they still ensure players can enjoy creative possibilities: for example, ramming a helicopter with a motorcycle loaded with C4 remains feasible. While implausible scenarios like tanks flying beyond the atmosphere are excluded, new forms of freedom—such as using sledgehammers to create advantageous environments—are included.
They also expressed high expectations for what players might achieve through Battlefield Portal, where entirely unexpected gameplay styles could emerge.
When asked about the team’s atmosphere with only around two weeks until release, they reported high morale driven by positive responses during open beta testing. The team is working with pride and dedication to finish the game. Preparation for seasonal content has already begun.
Asked about their impressions of the Battlefield 6 booth at TGS 2025, the developers praised it highly: “While we’ve exhibited at events worldwide over the past year, this is the first time we’ve seen a booth of such quality.” They described it as worthy of unveiling the Manhattan Bridge map for the first time and expressed gratitude to the development team.
When asked what they particularly enjoyed about Japanese culture and food, the team mentioned ramen, beef curry, and sushi. They especially noted that while sushi is available globally, nothing compares to experiencing it in Japan.
Finally, addressing fans in Japan: “Battlefield 6” carries forward the franchise’s DNA and has been crafted together with its player community. The developers expressed their gratitude and warmly encouraged everyone to enjoy the game.
