Genshū is the character who appears in the original HUNTER×HUNTER’s Greed Island arc as a “Bomb Man (Bomber)” — a deadly figure responsible for slaughtering countless players, standing directly in Gon and friends’ path. He can be considered the final boss of the Greed Island arc, becoming a popular character known for memes like “Got the Bomber.”

Along with the announcement, an interview with the project designer has been published. According to it, this product was created by Shūhei Miwata — who previously conceived numerous unique items such as “Shaking Vegeta,” “Shining Hisoka,” “Gon’s Sunglasses,” and “Mochimochi Tree T-shirt.”

Additionally, the interview revealed that a re-release of “Gon’s Sunglasses” has also officially started. Pre-orders for this item are likewise open until December 14 at 23:00.

To commemorate the release, a special interview with the developer that took place in early October has been featured.

Developer Interview

On an unspecified date in October, I picked up rumors of something suspicious happening at Premium Bandai. It seemed HUNTER×HUNTER’s “Bomber” character was getting sunglasses — seriously? As a fan of the series, I couldn’t stand it any longer and immediately contacted Bandai to secure an exclusive behind-the-scenes interview.

The project lead who appeared turned out to be none other than our familiar face — the same designer responsible for “Shaking Vegeta,” “Shining Hisoka,” “Gon’s Sunglasses,” and even the infamous “Mochimochi Tree T-shirt.” “You again?” Here follows a full transcript of my interview with Shūhei Miwata from Bandai’s Lifestyle Business Division. By the way, it runs about 3,000 characters long — filled with jokes and ending in exhaustion — so I recommend reading only if you’re truly bored.

— Congratulations on releasing Genshū’s sunglasses.

Shūhei Miwata (hereafter “Miwata”): Thank you very much today. Alright then—

— Don’t just end it like that!

Miwata: What? You’re definitely going to write biased reporting — this article too!

— Sorry, we’re not doing a journalistic-style interview here.

— What’s this with all the furigana?!

Miwata: It’s a banner (laughs).

— I get it. But what exactly is this product supposed to be?

Miwata: I really love Genshū — he’s my favorite character in HUNTER×HUNTER.

(— That’s quite unusual.)

Miwata: Yet strangely, there aren’t many official Genshū merchandise items out there in the world.

(— Not particularly surprising.)

Miwata: So I thought, “If no one else is making it, why not just make the thing I want myself?”

— Again, same motivation as always.

Miwata: Don’t call me a repeat offender!

— I thought you might be changing up Gon’s sunglasses color like last year — but nope?

Miwata: No, totally different structure. These sunglasses have been carefully engineered with many clever details.

— Like what exactly?

Miwata: Well… that’ll come later (laughs).

— Why not now?!

Miwata: In the anime, Genshū’s temple arms — the parts that go over the ears — appear to sprout from nowhere. When we began designing this product, figuring out how those pieces were attached was a major challenge. Honestly, it was tough on the optician shop we consulted (in Fukui Prefecture’s Sakai City). With Gon’s sunglasses, there was an actual frame structure. But Genshū’s glasses have no full frame around the lenses — and that’s actually closer to the original design! So we had to figure out how to recreate its shape while maintaining structural integrity. After extensive discussion with our designers, this is what we arrived at: a truly unique solution.

— You suddenly started speaking seriously… and now you’re trying to wrap it up fast. But I did feel your dedication to form.

— Anyway, I’ve already taken a look at the pre-order page. This one’s clearly another masterpiece — any particular point of focus?

Miwata: The initial scene with “Nikkusu.”

By placing Genshū’s silhouette and Nikkusu’s quote together on the page, we hint at Gon’s sunglasses re-release — just like in the original manga, where Genshū suddenly interrupts. I’ve always wanted to do this composition.

— That’s actually a very clever setup. And that silhouette — is it really Genshū’s?

Miwata: Yes, absolutely. It’s clearly meant to distinguish itself from Gon’s version when you look closely.

— Got it. As usual, the original work and parody are brilliantly executed — but this has realism at 30% and accuracy at 70%.

Miwata: I’d rather not say too much… but that number reflects Gon’s aura shift during his battle with Genshū.

Ah, speaking of battles with Genshū — if you combine the currently pre-ordering “Knight’s Choker” with these sunglasses, you can fully recreate Gon and Genshū’s epic clash!

— That’s going a bit too far. We’re only recreating parts of our bodies!

The Knight’s Choker currently in pre-sale — remarkably high quality.

— As usual, we’ve got glowing praise from various fields — and the sculptor seems to be in good spirits.

Miwata: It’s annoying how he perfectly mimics original quotes.

— Harsh! The former boss who did “Paradigm Shift” isn’t here this time?

Miwata: I cut him out because he’s moved up in rank — became too full of himself, so to speak.

— So his position shifted from Paradigm Shift, huh.

Miwata: Just shut up.

— Harsh!! By the way, if you’re asking me like Chidol-style… when exactly did you start planning Genshū’s sunglasses release?

Miwata: Huh? No no, I don’t have that kind of ability! It just happened — pure coincidence!

— No, you’re the one who planned it.

Miwata: When I first said I’d design Gon’s sunglasses.

— Wait…!?

Miwata: These two pairs look similar, right? If you just compare their silhouettes, they’re nearly identical. That’s when it hit me — “What if there was a pre-order page for Genshū’s sunglasses…”

— So you’ve actually been planning this for about two years?

Miwata: Well, my main job is designing items for the Kamen Rider and Super Sentai tokusatsu categories.

— Wait… seriously?!

Miwata: Oh, by the way — Gon’s sunglasses are being re-released now too. The pre-order page has been slightly updated.

— Back then, it caused a huge stir on social media — did Gon’s sunglasses actually sell well?

Miwata: Thanks to everyone, they sold quite well! To put it simply, I hoped they’d sell as much as the level of Gon’s battle at the Togashi Mansion… but in reality, sales were more like 100% of the full power — yes, 100% of a 100%! — from the Dark Martial Arts Tournament.

— That’s extremely hard to understand.

— Just between us — is there any next project planned for HUNTER×HUNTER or Yu Yu Hakusho?

Miwata: Honestly, every time I reread the original manga… it just hits me — “Wada…” It’s uncontrollable!

— Awakening!!

Miwata: Amazing ideas keep flooding into my mind like a tsunami. Wada! I could create even better products than before!

— So what about the next project?!

Miwata: Not moving at all.

— Why not?!!

Miwata: I gave it everything for Genshū — so nothing’s happening yet with the next one.

— Don’t you have anything you’d personally want to make?

Miwata: Maybe a potted plant that Gon’s older brother is stuck in. I’d love to wrap favorite plants around like a demonic vine.

— That’s way too out there — maybe even lower than that.

Miwata: If Genshū sells well, I’ll think about it. If not… I’m retiring.

— That’s extremely extreme. By the way, you mentioned your main job is tokusatsu — what kind of products do you make in that field?

Miwata: Time to wrap up already — we’re out of time (glancing at his watch).

Thumbnail image No.011 / “Genshū’s sunglasses” released from HUNTER×HUNTER — new creation by the designer behind “Shining Hisoka,” “Mochimochi Tree T-shirt,” etc.

— What’s that watch?!

Miwata: It’s the “Kamen Rider Den-O Spilling Sand Watch.” Currently available for pre-order — my own product.

— Wait, why are you suddenly promoting it?! Seriously, does it actually have sand in it?

Miwata: A hyper-stylish timepiece that encapsulates Den-O’s world view. About 40% of the dial is sealed with white sand.

— How on earth do you come up with such bizarre products — can’t even see the hands!

Miwata: I like items that are hard to use… but still eye-catching.

— Do you actually wear this kind of watch in daily life?

Miwata: Honestly, I don’t wear watches at all.

— That’s a terrible attitude.

Miwata: —So it’s best to avoid any actions that might cause misunderstandings. This was one sentence only. Okay?

— Not okay! If you’re not careful, this guy will jump back into HUNTER×HUNTER anytime.

— Honestly, I’m not sure if this interview felt dense or shallow… but since I’d like to wrap it up now, do you have anything to say to readers who made it all the way through?

Miwata: Please support “Soho’s White Horse T-shirt.”

— That one?! Thanks so much for today. (Exhausted)
