Girls Band Cry (shortened as GBC) is an original anime produced by Toei Animation, which aired from April to June 2024. Boasting a blend of “Illustration Look 3DCG and full animation production,” this series fully leverages the technical expertise developed by Toei Animation, positioning itself as the “pinnacle of girl band anime.” It quickly gained popularity through its powerful impact and dramatic storytelling, gradually becoming a major topic of conversation on social media as the story reached its midpoint.
The narrative begins with Juna Inazumi, who dropped out of high school and moved to Tokyo alone. She meets her idol, the vocalist Momoka Kawaramuki, and discovers the magic of music. Together with Subaru Awazu, who hides her true feelings; Tomo Ebizuka, burdened by a painful past of abandonment by her parents; and Lupu, an isolated soul, they form a rock band called Togetashi Togetari (shortened as Togeto). The story follows five girls struggling with personal issues as they confront societal absurdities in search of their own place in the world.

The long-awaited premiere day arrived, and the stage greeting was graced by Rina, Yurie, and Shuri—just days after their successful live performance at Nippon Budokan (related article). Surrounded by thunderous applause from an audience packed into the theater, the three expressed their gratitude and joy.
Rina said, “I’m a little nervous being on stage for my first time, but I’m really happy to be here with all of you.” Yurie, noting this was a post-main-film greeting, asked playfully, “Did everyone enjoy it?”—prompting an enthusiastic response from the crowd. Shuri also admitted she felt nervous about her debut stage appearance, yet managed to keep the mood lively with smiles.

Rina recalled that during voice recording sessions, she had recently arrived in Tokyo from Hiroshima herself, making her feel deeply connected to Juna’s journey. She especially empathized with Juna’s fear of the unknown and anxiety about entering a new world, reflecting, “Our situations are so similar—it felt like a destiny-driven encounter.”
Yurie was asked how she felt seeing Momoka rekindle her passion for music after nearly giving up on it—thanks to meeting Juna.
Yurie shared that when she first voiced Momoka, who had experienced failure at age 20, she thought: “She’s lived a life much deeper than mine.” Seeing Momoka rediscover her love for music through Juna and re-embark on her dream filled Yurie with admiration. She described the moment as “extremely powerful and admirable.”
Shuri was asked how she felt when she joined Juna, Momoka, and Subaru in episode 6—the first time all five members performed together.
She began simply: “Finally we’ve all come together.” During the original broadcast, she had been anxious each week. With Lupu having no appearances early on, she admitted feeling a bit lonely at times. But when episode 6 aired, she recalled with laughter: “My heart was racing!” Seeing their first performance as a full group made her feel that “this is where five’s story truly begins.” She added, “I felt incredibly happy.”
Then came the question about how the three real-life members of Togeto—Rina, Yurie, and Shuri—who have actually been performing live as the band since GBC began—viewed the fictional five characters.
Rina responded immediately with awe: “Their energy and performance sense are amazing.” Shuri chuckled, saying, “Compared to these on-screen girls, we might be a bit out of shape!” Rina and Yurie couldn’t help but agree. When Rina struggled for words—“So… so amazing!”—Yurie smoothly stepped in with: “They’re portrayed as incredibly cool,” bringing smiles all around.
Still, despite their humility, fans who’ve seen Togeto’s live performances—including at the Budokan—know that the real-life band delivers an equally powerful and energetic performance. In Rina’s words, it’s truly “so, so amazing.”
Yurie said: “Even though we’re from different ages and backgrounds, there’s a genuine human connection between them—a deep emotional bond. It’s cool how they instantly connect with one another.” She added that the real-life Togeto members were all initially shy; it took time for them to open up and build trust.
Meanwhile, Shuri highlighted: “Unlike our real band, these five characters argue often—but they’re also able to face each other head-on. That kind of strong mutual trust is one of their greatest strengths.”
The conversation then turned to a more challenging question: “Please tell us about the joys, difficulties of being in a band, and the magic of music.”
Rina admitted, “It’s definitely difficult.” But when Shuri said that creating music together is one of life’s greatest pleasures, Rina nodded thoughtfully: “You can’t just do it easily.” Yurie reflected on how playing music as a hobby had once been nothing more than a dream. Now, she said, the most rewarding part was connecting with audiences live—“It’s so joyful and meaningful to see people appreciate all our hard work.”
On challenges within band collaboration, all three agreed: “The compatibility between individuals is crucial when making music together.” When Shuri murmured about differences in direction, Yurie smiled and asked playfully: “We’re okay with that, right?” Rina instantly replied with confidence: “Absolutely—no worries at all!”
For the final question, each expressed their enthusiasm for the upcoming nationwide stage greeting tour.
