“Outerplane” starts anew with a publisher without prior publishing experience?
The turn-based RPG “Outerplane,” praised by fans of 2D culture for its unique world view and strategic battle system, has reached a new turning point. After concluding two years of collaboration with the previous publisher, it has officially partnered with Major9, declaring its ambition to soar globally once again. However, Major9 is an enterprise without prior publishing experience—so why make such a choice?
Publisher Change: The Beginning of a New Vision
Major9 was founded in 2008 as an entertainment company centered on music, and since 2023 has expanded into advertising, marketing, and game publishing—becoming a multi-entertainment enterprise. It places particular emphasis on global game marketing expertise, positioning “dialogue with users” at the core of its strategy.
Major9 CEO Lee Doam stated: “The subculture gaming market is becoming increasingly competitive. What small to mid-sized titles like ours can offer as competitive advantages lies in sincere content and genuine communication with our players.” He added, “We’ve actively participated in communities as actual users throughout the publishing process, experiencing pain points firsthand. Our goal is to protect and develop both the game world and its characters alongside our community.”
Short-term Updates: Eliminating Elements Hindering Core Fun

VAGAMES PD Hyun Munsu declared: “We will boldly improve elements that hinder the game’s core enjoyment.”
A major change involves overhauling the character acquisition system. Previously, key characters needed for progression heavily relied on in-app purchases. Going forward, players will be able to obtain unowned characters by increasing entries into the “Doppelgänger Dungeon” and collecting fragments—cutting character transcendence time roughly in half. Players can now expect to acquire two characters within about nine days of fragment farming.
Additionally, revisions to the battle pass allow paying users to receive one permanent character upon purchase, while resource consumption in the “Synchronization Room” at headquarters will be reduced. A new skill book synthesis and decomposition system has also been introduced, allowing players to focus more on growth and collection enjoyment.
Significant improvements to UI/UX convenience are also underway. PD Hyun reflected: “We’ve accumulated content without sufficient organization before. Many users likely found it inconvenient with too many shops and event currencies.” He highlighted the addition of a “bulk-clearing” feature for challenge content as one of the biggest post-transfer enhancements.
Long-term Roadmap: Content Expansion and Character Balance Adjustment
VAGAMES is focusing on enhancing and expanding existing content to serve long-time players. The single-event “Elemental Tower” will expand to 100 floors, while “Flying Sky Tower” will see increased difficulty levels planned. New challenge content and growth cap expansions are also under consideration for this year.
Moreover, the team aims to gradually improve over-reliance on new characters and unrealistic progression structures by continuously rebalancing two to three characters monthly, offering diverse enjoyment through varied team compositions.
Strengthening Communication with Players
Major9 and VAGAMES repeatedly emphasized “dialogue with users.” Lee Doam said, “We’ve discussed with VAGAMES to launch a regular dialogue series between the PD and players, starting with this developer letter,” adding that they plan to conduct as many developer letters, live streams, and user roundtables as possible.
They also plan to increase offline event opportunities starting with Tokyo Game Show, broadening direct engagement with global players through local merchandise giveaways.
PD Hyun added: “As we continue long-term service, we’ll reevaluate aspects that have become routine from the perspective of new users and improve them to provide fresh goals and motivation for our longtime players.”
Major9 and VAGAMES are closely collaborating on a wide range of topics—including UI/UX improvements, cel animation content related to IP assets, as well as PVE, PVP, and BM (business model) areas. They’ve clarified current actionable items versus long-term improvement targets and plan to share decisions with users through regular communication channels.
2025 Second-Half Update Roadmap Released
Alongside the restart following the transfer, a roadmap for updates in the second half of 2025 has been unveiled. The previously delayed summer-exclusive character “Qingyun’s Ambition - Ember” will be implemented, and the popular event “Melsha Festival” is being revived, offering players the chance to obtain one favorite demi-character.
In October, hot spring and Halloween events are returning. November brings the 2.5th anniversary “Auphess” celebration, introducing limited character “Gnosis Viera,” along with a new “Awakening System”—initially available for the free-to-play character “Veronica.”
In December, the first chapter of Story Season 4 will launch, unveiling a brand-new narrative. Last year’s popular Christmas event returns as well, featuring a revival of “Dian’s Night Blessing,” along with new limited versions of beloved characters.
More Value Than Sales: A Reasonable Business Model Design
Rather than focusing solely on sales targets, “Outerplane” aims to attract users through a business model design that offers better value compared to other major subculture games and rich event rewards.
Lee Doam revealed: “We’ve already achieved lower clothing prices and introduced low-cost daily packages. We’re currently discussing further reductions in transcendence package pricing and caps.” He added, “Our goal is to create a structure where casual users can enjoy the game for roughly the price of one cup of coffee per day, while offering reasonable business models even to heavy players.”
Aiming to Grow Alongside Players
PD Hyun promised: “Even if it takes time, we will listen attentively to diverse feedback and improve step by step so that players can enjoy ‘Outerplane’ for a long time—and with real joy.”
The partnership between “Outerplane” and Major9 is not merely about changing publishers. It represents a new model of game service—one built on shared growth with its community. With the developer’s expertise, the publisher’s global reach, and genuine dialogue with users at its foundation, expectations are rising for the next chapter in “Outerplane”’s success story.
