Apple improved methods for installing third-party app stores with the release of “iOS 18.6” in July this year, in response to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act.

Epic Games reports that iOS 18.6 has reduced the number of steps required to install apps from 15 down to just 6, and has also improved warning screens and setup procedures. Previously, about 65% of users dropped off during installation; now this rate has decreased to approximately 25%.

Meanwhile, Epic Games points out that Apple’s continued imposition of core technology fees and approval processes may still violate the Digital Markets Act.

Epic also criticizes Google for requiring 12 steps to install third-party stores on Android and for warning screens that hinder user experience.
