At the Indie Game Pavilion of “Tokyo Game Show 2025,” numerous roguelike titles were showcased, but one stood out with its unique gameplay system—Ved:Recure, developed by Chinese indie studio SummerClip.

This game features anime-style, beautiful young girls fighting stylishly with Japanese swords and dual pistols in a roguelike action experience. It’s available on PC (Steam) and fully supports Japanese language.

The standout feature is its stylish combat style—evading enemy attacks via “Perfect Guard” or “Perfect Dodge,” landing cool poses, then countering effectively. The game feels like an expression of the developer’s personal tastes, giving it a certain sense of purity.

Customize Special Abilities for a Unique Rogue-Like Action Experience

At the heart of this game’s combat system are two core mechanics: “BUFF Slots” and “BUFF Chain.”

While “buff” in general refers to any kind of enhancement, in Ved:Recure, BUFFs take on more unique roles—functioning less like traditional buffs and more like special effects or skills. Examples include launching fireballs, creating slow-motion fields, generating invincibility barriers, or summoning black holes that pull enemies in.

However, these aren’t simply usable at will. Instead, they must be placed into the character’s “BUFF Slots” and activated only when specific conditions are met—such as “Normal Attack Finish,” “Dodge Counter,” “Guard,” or “Taking Damage.” In effect, these BUFFs function like passive skills whose activation timing can be customized.

For example, imagine a BUFF that creates a slow-motion field. If placed in the “Normal Attack Finish” slot, it activates when you fully execute a normal attack—causing enemies to fly backward slowly and making follow-up attacks easier. Placing it under “Guard” makes counterattacks more effective; placing it under “Taking Damage” helps recover your posture faster.

Thus, even with identical BUFFs, their effectiveness changes depending on which slot they’re placed in. Mastering this system—customizing each BUFF to fit your preferred playstyle—is key to succeeding in Ved:Recure.

Then comes the “BUFF Chain” system—allowing multiple BUFFs to be set for a single condition, aiming for synergistic effects. For instance, if you place both a “burning” and an “electrified” BUFF on the “Guard” slot, every guard triggers fire and lightning damage. Although the second BUFF may have a cooldown after activation, proper timing can make it extremely powerful.

Since switching out BUFFs costs nothing, players are free to experiment extensively. And as this is a roguelike game, which means you never know what buffs will appear next—it’s up to chance. This forces improvisation and encourages experimentation; sometimes, an unexpected combination turns out surprisingly effective, making the gameplay increasingly addictive.

This trial-and-error process particularly shines during boss fights. Facing bosses with diverse attack patterns and relentless combos demands consecutive Perfect Dods or Perfect Guards. Depending on your strategy, you can load up defensive BUFFs for a tanky build—or prioritize offensive power by setting buffs to trigger on “Normal Attack Finish” for aggressive play. This is where player preference really comes into focus—yet regardless of style, successfully activating your chosen buffs brings a powerful sense of accomplishment.

At this year’s exhibition, players could try two characters: “CHILLO,” who wields a sword, and “PLUMY,” who uses dual pistols. The final version will feature seven distinct characters, each with unique traits. Since different characters and weapons may alter how BUFFs feel to use, the game’s future potential is truly exciting. While release date remains unannounced, fans are eagerly awaiting further updates.
