On July 24, Square Enix streamed the 88th FFXIV Producer Letter LIVE, an information program for its MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV. The stream announced that Patch 7.3 “Signposts to Tomorrow” would be implemented on August 5. This article reports on the live stream featuring in-game content.

Additionally, the Monster Hunter Wilds collaboration will also be implemented alongside Patch 7.35. To coincide with these announcements, a full trailer showcasing the content was released.

In this footage, players can see the target monster, Dragon Protector Alzheim, as well as helper characters like Iru and Secreto. Beyond battling the boss, players will be able to cook meat, have supplies transported by an Iru, and obtain familiar equipment items.

The presentation also covered specific details of the content. The two main collaboration events are “Hunt for the Dragon Protector Alzheim” and “Ultimate Hunt for the Dragon Protector Alzheim.”

Toshinori Yoshida mentioned that when previous collaborations featured monsters like Rio Leuas (related article: https://www.4gamer.net/games/199/G019924/20180717001/), striving for accurate replication led to certain aspects that were difficult to achieve, resulting in mixed reactions. Learning from this experience, Yoshida emphasized their determination this time to create the best possible battle content within FFXIV.

That said, there are also elements clearly rooted in Monster Hunter’s own philosophy—something Yoshida underscored by saying, “Listen: A hunter’s true duty is to study a monster’s behavior and ecology closely before engaging.” He added that while Alzheim doesn’t lack head-breaking mechanics, it features many individual player-specific gimmicks. Quests come with proper storylines, so players should have progressed reasonably far into the main storyline before participating.

Rewards include a wide variety of items such as hunter gear (armor and weapons), mounts, minions, furnishings, garden tools, portrait materials, fashion accessories, and orchestration scores. A diverse selection is also available for camp customization—players can gather enough to recreate an authentic hunter’s camp.

Next, an in-game playthrough was revealed featuring Capcom’s Ryozo Tsujimoto and Kaname Fujio. The setup consisted of 8 players: tank ×2, healer ×2, DPS ×4. Fujio took on the role of Dark Knight as main tank, while Yoshida played Black Mage. Notably, all seven others—including team members from Square Enix—were playing for the first time (due to strong requests by Yoshida).

As Yoshida mentioned, the battle features numerous individual-targeted attacks, and Alzheim remains aggressively mobile throughout. However, special recovery items called “Great Healing Potions” are provided during this fight—allowing players to recover from mistakes individually.

Due to wide attack ranges, players may find themselves constantly watching the ground for warning signs—but Alzheim’s movements provide plenty of clues as well, making it challenging to determine exactly when and where to look. Once health drops below a certain threshold, its behavior changes significantly and aggression intensifies—making this boss difficult even for first-time players.

However, once players observe the patterns closely, they can successfully adapt. The first attempt ended in defeat due to a fallen healer—but on the second try, everyone managed to learn and react accordingly while enjoying themselves. Ultimately, the team succeeded after two attempts, indicating that playing with other first-time participants via voice chat could be very enjoyable.

Incidentally, after defeating Alzheim, players can perform a “skinning” action similar to the original game. Collecting scales from this process allows exchanging them for rewards. Yoshida emphasized strongly: “Make sure you don’t forget!” So be careful not to leave the content too quickly.

Players can even climb onto the fallen Alzheim—it’s a great opportunity for group photo-taking!

Finally, the visual presentation of rewards was shown using Yoshida’s own character. Regarding equipment design, adjustments were made to accommodate different races’ body types—such as adding holes for pointed ears—and customization options like dyeing are also supported, suggesting a wide variety of combinations.

For certain equipment items that lack a backside, the Capcom development team has created new designs from scratch.

Later, a screenshot campaign will be held. Players can participate using various collaboration items from both titles.
