Recapping One Week at 4Gamer "Weekly 4Gamer", November 3–9, 2025

The snowplow vehicle of Sapporo City Tram, nicknamed “Sasara Train,” made its first operation of the season on November 3–9, 2025, during which 252 articles were published on 4Gamer. The nominees for the 2025 “New Word and Popular Phrase Grand Prize” were announced, but as someone who tends to be a bit behind trends, I didn’t recognize about half of them. I thought “Chappy” referred to an evil doll possessed by a murderer’s soul—but it turns out that was actually referring to ChatGPT. Really? When I asked Chappy directly, the response said it’s also commonly called that on Japanese social media. You really know everything, don’t you, Chappy?

“逆水寒” (Sword of Justice), global official service begins today. An open-world MMORPG praised for its use of AI technology and offering “100 different ways to live,” depending on player choices Thumbnail image No. 035 / Weekly 4Gamer: Looking back at the past week, November 3–9, 2025

Last week saw several notable releases, including the latest installment in the Paradox game series, Grand Strategy: Europa Universalis V (link), and Zelda Hyrule Warriors: The Seal of War, set in an ancient era of “sealed war” (link). Additionally, the release dates were announced for a zombie disaster-focused disaster simulation game, ZOMBIE Disaster Drill (link), and turn-based RPG “Tales of the Hero: Gagaru Btorilogy” (available on iOS / Android / PC). Furthermore, a play report was published on the visual novel Absolute Zero Degrees of Despair, which has no survival ending—a topic that seems to be generating significant interest recently. It feels like this week is packed with new game announcements.

As we approach the year-end shopping season, more games are being released and information about them is being revealed—making it both challenging and enjoyable for gamers wondering what to play next. Several articles made it into the top 10 of the access rankings; please check out those details below.

Moving on to this week’s highlights: South Korea’s largest gaming convention, G-STAR 2025, is set to open in Busan on November 13. While information available at this stage remains limited, last week KRAFTON revealed exhibition details, including the world premiere of “Palworld Mobile / Palworld Mobile” (iOS / Android)—a mobile version of the popular game. As mentioned in an earlier article (link), numerous renowned Japanese creators are scheduled to participate, suggesting this year’s event will be larger than ever. Though it’s a bit far for many Japanese gamers to visit in person, rest assured—4Gamer is likely sending an on-site reporting team to deliver the latest news directly from the scene. So go ahead and get excited; it’s free to do so.

With that, despite the cold weather, let’s cheerfully reflect on this week in 4Gamer and across the global gaming industry—take care as you go!

Note: For brevity, PlayStation is abbreviated as PS, Nintendo Switch as Switch, and smartphones as smartphone, etc.

Top Articles from Last Week

The top article in last week’s access rankings was once again “Cellular Analysis of Mobile Games” (link). This popular series, which presents various data on mobile games based on reports from the American research firm Sensor Tower, has become a fixture among top-ranking articles. “Wow, how enviable,” I said—actually, I already wrote that last week.

According to a new article published on November 6 (link), “Pro Yakyuu Spirits A”, released by KONAMI in 2015, claimed the top spot on Japan’s domestic revenue rankings. As a long-standing favorite that consistently ranks high, Pro Spirit A achieved a remarkable 653% increase in revenue compared to last week thanks to its special event commemorating its 10th anniversary—the “Daisuke Selection,” which introduced new abilities for player Daisuke Matsui. This surge may also be related to the intense popularity of Major League Baseball’s World Series, broadcast widely in Japan this year. Incidentally, it was reported that Matsui underwent right elbow surgery on November 4 and will miss all of next season.

Thumbnail image No. 030 / Weekly 4Gamer: Looking back at the past week, November 3–9, 2025

The second most accessed article was a feature piece discussing the upcoming “New Smartphone Law,” which will be fully implemented on December 18. The official name is “Law Concerning Promotion of Competition in Specific Software Used on Smartphones,” passed back in June. Its purpose is to ensure security while promoting fair competition among essential smartphone software—such as operating systems, applications, and browsers—to allow users to benefit directly. Makes sense.

While the law targets “designated operators” rather than end-users, it’s likely that gamers like us will also reap benefits from its intent. Although this article originally appeared two weeks ago, it continued to draw sustained attention from readers.

Third place went to a story about a gamer based in Taiwan who built their own custom arcade cabinet that integrates the NES and Super NES with a display. This kind of retro hardware article tends to consistently attract interest, perhaps indicating readership has a higher average age than expected. Haha.

Thumbnail image No. 033 / Weekly 4Gamer: Looking back at the past week, November 3–9, 2025

The distinctive feature of this homemade original cabinet is its use of a CRT television as the display, giving it significant depth and evoking strong nostalgic feelings. It resembles Sharp’s MZ-80 model—but with this setup, you could enjoy NES or Super NES games anytime, anywhere, exactly as they looked back then. However, there are currently no plans for commercial production. If Nintendo had released something like this in the 1980s, it might have sold well.

It’s also intriguing how fans managed to obtain CRT televisions when many manufacturers have ceased production—showing just how passionate retro gaming enthusiasts can be.

Top Titles from Last Week

The most discussed title among readers last week was “Pokémon LEGENDS Z-A”, an action RPG released by Pokémon on October 16 for both Switch 2 (link) and Switch (link). Last week, we covered news about the launch of Season 2 of Rank Battle (related article here), a new video revealing details on the paid downloadable content “Pokémon LEGENDS Z-A M-Dimension Rush” (related article here), and updates to the game (related article here). Additionally, we published numerous articles on merchandise, collaboration events—too many to list in this limited space. It was quite a lot.

The second most discussed title was “Pro Yakyuu Spirits A,” which topped the domestic revenue rankings last week. Third place went to Nintendo’s upcoming release, “Kirby’s Air Ride”, scheduled for November 20.

Originally released in 2003 as a spin-off racing game from the Kirby series, “Airride” is the long-awaited sequel after 22 years—fueled by high anticipation. To satisfy that eagerness, writer Okudos Kumata (link) dug up an old Nintendo GameCube and played through the City Trial again—a kind of 22-year-delayed play report published here—which garnered significant attention, even making it into the top access rankings. If you haven’t read it yet, check it out for a fun preview.

MAGES.’s Switch-exclusive title, “ZOMBIE Disaster Drill,” scheduled for release on November 20, landed in ninth place. As the name suggests, it’s a point-and-click disaster simulation game that teaches you how to respond if you ever encounter zombies—making learning fun. It’s like a video game adaptation of Max Brooks’ The Zombie Survival Guide. The cozy-style graphics are also quite interesting.

Rockstar Games’ globally anticipated new installment, “Grand Theft Auto VI” (available on PS5 (link) and Xbox Series X|S (link)), has been announced for a second delay in release date. Originally slated for release this year, it was first delayed to May 26, 2026—but now it’s being pushed again, with the new launch window set for November 19, 2026. Yes, that’s another full year from now! What about the PC version? When will it arrive?

Publishers eager to avoid a release date clash with GTA VI are scrambling to reorganize their own schedules—but personally, I’m curious about Devolver Digital’s next move. During the previous delay announcement, they made a quirky post on their official X account (link) declaring “We’re not going anywhere” with some new title release that same day. This time around, they’ve posted: “If you need a publisher to get this thing back on track, just reach out.” Could it mean another title is coming out the same day?

Additionally, fast-food giant KFC and pizza chain Domino’s Pizza have both reposted their messages—clear signs of how wildly popular this game has become.

Now, as retro game consoles get re-released with modern technology and are gaining popularity, as mentioned in this article, the crowdfunding campaign for “Vectrex Mini,” a mini version of the classic Vectrex console, has officially begun. Checking out its Kickstarter page (link), it’s clear that funding has far surpassed its target—indicating high interest.

Thumbnail image No. 026 / Weekly 4Gamer: Looking back at the past week, November 3–9, 2025

The Vectrex, originally released in 1982 by General Consumer Electronics (a company that no longer exists), was sold in Japan under the name “Light Speed Ship” by Bandai in 1983. Its standout feature was its use of vector scan technology for screen display—unlike standard CRT raster scanning, this method is inherently similar to oscilloscopes and radar systems, resulting in monochrome graphics only. Complex scenes were difficult to render, and frame rates were slow—but the unique look gave a cool, futuristic vibe that still captivates players today. The development challenges must have been significant due to its specialized graphics. The CPU used was Motorola’s 6809, affectionately known as “Mark.”

The new “Vectrex Mini” uses an OLED panel for display—so while it won’t be true vector scan, it will still evoke that retro feel. I’d love to try games like Lunar Lander or Asteroids.
