Thumbnail image No.009 / [Interview] A New “Haruka” After 25 Years — Developers Speak of Their Deep Feelings and Romance Packed Into This Masterpiece

The “Haruka Naku Toka no Naka de” series (hereafter referred to as “Haruka”), celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2025, is a flagship title of Koei Tecmo Games’ Ruby Party brand and one of the representative titles of their Neo-Romance series.

This new installment reimagines the setting from past entries, weaving an entirely fresh story within a new timeline. It also features new encounters with the Eight Leaves, offering different relationships and narratives than before—potentially bringing joy to long-time fans while also surprising or even puzzling them in unexpected ways.

4Gamer sat down for this interview following their previous 25th-anniversary feature (related article), speaking with Maya Egawa, the Brand Manager of Ruby Party, and Shin Sugiwara, Director of this title, to learn about their deep affection for the “Haruka” series and the unique appeal of its latest entry.

The 25th Anniversary of the “Haruka” Series: A New Story Begins

4Gamer:
Nice to meet you. First, could you please tell us about your roles in this project?

Maya Egawa (hereafter, Egawa):
I serve as Executive Producer, overseeing everything from defining the overall direction of the work to managing creative content.

Shin Sugiwara (hereafter, Sugiwara):
I’m serving as Director. I’m responsible for world-building, game concept development, and story design.

4Gamer:
This is a highly anticipated new installment in the Neo-Romance series and the latest entry in the “Haruka” franchise. What led to its development?

Egawa:
We’ve previously launched two new entries under the Neo-Romance banner: Angelique Luminarize and Golden Fantasia Starlight Orchestra. Given that we had already continued with the Angelique and Golden Fantasia series, it was decided quite early on that our next project would be a fresh entry in the “Haruka” series.

Initially, we considered creating a numbered sequel. However, since Haruka Naku Toka no Naka de 7 served as a culmination of the previous twenty-year run, we concluded that introducing an entirely new direction was more appropriate for bringing this beloved franchise into today’s era while preserving its core charm—thus launching our current project.

4Gamer:
So is this essentially a side story? Or is it taking a completely different approach?

Egawa:
It’s the latter. The previous “Haruka” series isn’t ending—it will continue alongside this new entry as an alternate timeline, forming a brand-new series.

4Gamer:
Is it similar to how Angelique features separate universes such as the Bird Goddess Universe and the Sacred Beast Universe (where different queens are protagonists)?

Egawa:
Exactly—our mental image is quite close. The new entry, Angelique Luminarize, shares a similar position and conceptual approach; it’s like giving “Haruka” a new younger sibling.

4Gamer:
The 25th anniversary of the “Haruka” series brings both its enduring appeal and deep personal hopes for this title. Could you share your thoughts?

Egawa:
A consistent theme across all entries in the “Haruka” series has been “love that transcends time and space.” Throughout the franchise, the protagonists—referred to as “Gods”—travel from our modern world into alternate worlds resembling various historical periods, where they fulfill great missions alongside the Eight Leaves. Their love stories develop amidst these adventures—a quintessential Neo-Romance narrative. This core charm remains unchanged in this new title.

The biggest difference lies in how we approach time and setting: previous games focused on a single era per entry, whereas here we journey across multiple eras to resolve various issues.

Additionally, the main story unfolds not in our modern world nor in a traditional fantasy realm—but at “Ryugū,” a new and unique location that introduces an entirely fresh element.

Sugiwara:
A major challenge for this project was preserving the beloved essence of “Haruka” while introducing something completely new.

As with earlier entries, fans can still enjoy romance in historically inspired alternate worlds. But here, at our base—Ryugū—we also emphasize everyday interactions with the Eight Leaves. I believe that blending grand adventure with intimate daily moments is what truly sets this title apart.

4Gamer:
The “Haruka” series has traditionally been released on home consoles. Why did you choose to develop this title as a smartphone app?

Egawa:
One of our absolute goals in creating this game was to make something that fits into the lives of modern, busy women.

Today’s women juggle work, school, family responsibilities, and numerous personal interests—all while feeling time-poor. We wanted players to be able to access the game anytime they want, enjoying moments with their beloved characters at their own pace. That’s why we chose a smartphone app format.

4Gamer:
Indeed, smartphones are used by people across all age groups now. With widespread adoption, fewer people seem to own home consoles compared to the peak of that era.

Egawa:
Yes. Home consoles offer deep immersion into rich worlds—but for this new “Haruka” project, we wanted to create a different kind of experience altogether.

Smartphones are always within reach; they’re close at hand and easy to use. We wanted players to effortlessly enjoy the story and world—feeling as if they’re spending 24 hours with their Eight Leaves every day. That’s why we chose this format.

We want not only newcomers but also fans who haven’t played in a while to feel welcome. To reach the broadest possible audience, an accessible app was the best choice.

Thoughtful Depictions of Individual Romances and Relationships Among the Eight Leaves

4Gamer:
What feelings lie behind the title Haruka Naku Toka no Naka de Ryugū no Kami Ko?

Sugiwara:
We actually considered over 50 different titles before finalizing this one.

Egawa:
There were various directions—some with poetic, sea-inspired names; others that emphasized the new “Haruka” series. Ultimately, we settled on what felt most straightforward and clear to audiences.

Sugiwara:
When delivering a new form of “Haruka,” our project had two main goals: first, to create something deeply cherished by fans as an authentic continuation of the franchise’s soul; second, to send a welcoming message—“Welcome! Why not start here?”—to those who have never played before.

With that in mind, we wanted the title itself to clearly convey that this is not a numbered sequel, but rather a new entry in the “Haruka” series. That was our team’s wish.

So we thought: “Throughout all ‘Haruka’ entries, who has always been at the center? The protagonist—and also the player themselves—the God.” Therefore, including the word “God” (Kami Ko) was absolutely essential to us.

When combined with the setting of “Ryugū,” this felt like the most direct and understandable title possible—so we went with it.

Thumbnail image No.017 / [Interview] A New “Haruka” After 25 Years — Developers Speak of Their Deep Feelings and Romance Packed Into This Masterpiece

4Gamer:
Why did you choose to feature multiple time periods, with Ryugū as a central base?

Sugiwara:
First, the inclusion of the “Ryugū” section was designed to leverage the smartphone format and offer players a chance to experience shared daily life with the Eight Leaves. In this segment, dialogue changes depending on the time or season, and features like “co-sleeping” aim to create romantic feelings that feel deeply connected to the player’s real-life routines.

On the other hand, we introduced multiple historical eras in the “alternate world” section because one of the smartphone app’s key strengths is its ability to expand over time through updates. We wanted players to immediately sense this evolving nature from the very beginning. It was also important to deliver the joy of choice early on.

Since each Eight Leaf comes from a different era, you typically travel with only one chosen character into that specific historical period. To help players intuitively pick their favorite right away, we based the characters’ designs and personalities around well-known historical figures—making it easier for fans to visualize them. We’ve put great care into both design and backstory, so we’d love if players start by exploring a character they’re drawn to.

4Gamer:
Even from the revealed content alone, we have periods like Heian, Sengoku, and Bakumatsu—historical eras that are particularly popular.

Egawa:
Previous “Haruka” entries had already covered many well-liked historical settings such as the Heian period and Sengoku era. That’s why this time around, we deliberately chose not to limit ourselves—we wanted to offer a rich variety of eras for players to enjoy.

This is an entirely new approach compared to past “Haruka” titles: simultaneously traveling across multiple eras.

4Gamer:
With so many different eras and numerous characters from various historical backgrounds, selecting the Eight Leaves must have been quite challenging?

Egawa:
We actually asked each other, “How are we going to handle this?” (laughing). You’re absolutely right—previous entries already featured a lot of well-known historical figures as characters.

Sugiwara:
Fans deeply connect with past Eight Leaves and their associated characters. So choosing them was truly difficult.

However, as Egawa mentioned earlier, this new entry takes place in an entirely new timeline, one that has deep connections to the previous series’ worlds—but not identical ones. For example, one of our new Eight Leaves is Kiyomori Taira. We’d be very happy if players see him as a different character from the version in Haruka Naku Toka no Naka de 3, separated by time and space.

4Gamer:
The pairing of “Heaven’s Azure Dragon” Minamoto Yoritomo with “Earth’s Azure Dragon” Taira Kiyomori evokes strong memories of earlier entries—quite a satisfying touch, wouldn’t you say?

Sugiwara:
I’m really glad you noticed that. In the main story unfolding at Ryugū, we’ll also explore conflicts and bonds among teammates, so I hope players enjoy not only the relationship between those from the same era but also connections across time.

Ryugū Base Thumbnail image No.027 / [Interview] A New “Haruka” After 25 Years — Developers Speak of Their Deep Feelings and Romance Packed Into This Masterpiece

Egawa:
We have many “Haruka” fans within our company. During early meetings evaluating title prototypes, a lot of discussion centered on how to portray the bonds between the Eight Leaves. In fact, we received strong feedback from internal staff saying things like “We want to see not just romance, but also their relationships and teamwork.”

Initially, we planned for Ryugū’s main story to be simpler—but based on this input, we shifted direction and poured effort into making it richer. As a result, the final product is one where both love and heartfelt bonds are deeply enjoyable.

4Gamer:
The chance for Eight Leaves from different eras to gather together—this only works because of the unique Ryugū base. This kind of story experience feels truly exclusive to this title—and it’s raising anticipation even more!

Egawa:
In that sense, I believe this title is a fitting tribute to the 25th anniversary of the “Haruka” series.

Thumbnail image No.005 / [Interview] A New “Haruka” After 25 Years — Developers Speak of Their Deep Feelings and Romance Packed Into This Masterpiece

4Gamer:
At launch, only six Eight Leaves will be available. Why not start with the traditional number of eight?

Sugiwara:
Each of our new Eight Leaves exists in their respective historical eras. At first, two from each era come to Ryugū as our base. Starting with eight might give players the impression that no more characters can be added—so we deliberately began with six instead.

As the story unfolds, additional Eight Leaves will appear—we hope you’ll look forward to them.

Egawa:
The Eight Leaves serving the God of Ryugū aren’t all present from the start. Each era has its own Eight Leaves, and currently only three eras are revealed—so naturally, many more await. Whether they arrive one by one or bring in entirely new eras, we hope fans will stay curious and excited.

New characters will be introduced at a rate of about one every few months.

4Gamer:
Could you also tell us why you brought on a new cast?

Sugiwara:
As Egawa mentioned, we wanted this title to function like the “younger sibling” of past “Haruka” entries. From the perspective of these newly introduced Eight Leaves, those from earlier series are respected elders in another timeline.

To establish that relationship and role clearly, we decided to welcome a new voice cast for this entry.

A Grand Gathering: The God, the Eight Leaves, and Past Characters All Come Together!

4Gamer:
The protagonist here is set at age 20—slightly older than in previous entries.

Sugiwara:
Yes. This time we’ve introduced more mature romantic expressions, so we cast our protagonist as an adult woman. We wanted to bring the story closer to players’ real-life perspectives, making it easier for them to immerse themselves.

We also carefully crafted the choices presented during the narrative to better reflect players’ emotions and preferences.

Kotoko Noguchi (CV: Masami Seto) Thumbnail image No.016 / [Interview] A New “Haruka” After 25 Years — Developers Speak of Their Deep Feelings and Romance Packed Into This Masterpiece

4Gamer:
The protagonist becomes the “God of Ryugū.” Does this differ from past White Dragon or Black Dragon Gods?

Sugiwara:
Yes. The setting here is a timeline ruled by a golden dragon deity, so our protagonist, as that god’s successor, holds a distinct position different from previous series’ gods.

4Gamer:
Golden dragons have appeared in earlier entries too, haven’t they?

Sugiwara:
Exactly—fans familiar with the series might immediately recognize this kind of dragon god.

4Gamer:
Why did you choose multiple character designers for this project?

Sugiwara:
Our goal was to offer diverse experiences throughout the game, given that it unfolds across two distinct axes: Ryugū and alternate worlds—and spans multiple historical eras. To match each designer’s unique style, we commissioned them accordingly, resulting in richly individualized characters.

That said, for key figures—including our protagonist—the entire team unanimously wanted to collaborate with Junko Mizuno, who has handled character design and comic adaptations across all previous “Haruka” series. We’re deeply grateful she agreed to join us this time.

Additionally, we’ve planned events every few months where characters from past entries will appear. The first event features Hinoe from Haruka 3

Hinoe (CV: Naotaka Takahashi) Thumbnail image No.008 / [Interview] A New “Haruka” After 25 Years — Developers Speak of Their Deep Feelings and Romance Packed Into This Masterpiece

4Gamer:
We can almost hear the joyful cries of past gods!

Sugiwara:
We’d be thrilled if they do! In this event, we’ll implement a card featuring a romantic sequel to Hinoe and Mochi, illustrated exclusively by Junko Mizuno.

Egawa:
The artwork is not only beautiful but also very sweet—please look forward to it!

4Gamer:
How will events involving past Eight Leaves be structured?

Sugiwara:
There are deep connections between the timelines of previous “Haruka” entries and this new one, so they frequently approach each other. However, if they get too close, there’s a risk of timeline collision—so during these moments, a special place called the “Bridge of Time” appears where both timelines’ Eight Leaves must cooperate to prevent conflict.

Past Eight Leaves use their “soul fragments” to stop collisions and gradually recover lost pieces—which leads them to reflect on past romances with previous gods. In our first event, we’ll carefully depict Hinoe’s journey from meeting Mochi to finally uniting—with her perspective included.

4Gamer:
So the “soul fragments” play a crucial role in this title?

Sugiwara: Yes. This mechanic allows even players who haven’t played past entries to rediscover and enjoy the romances of earlier gods.

Another highlight is our exclusive “romantic sequel” card stories, illustrated by Junko Mizuno—featuring richly sweet content with new voice recordings added throughout.

Beyond cards, we’ve also integrated new voice lines from past Eight Leaves into various moments during events.

4Gamer:
This event will be deeply meaningful for fans of the series. Hinoe is particularly adaptable and would fit perfectly in such a situation.

Sugiwara:
Indeed. She interacts freely with our current Eight Leaves, especially with Date Masamune—the other “Azure Dragon” from Heaven—so please pay special attention to that interaction.

4Gamer:
Are there many scenes where Eight Leaves sharing the same elemental power (like Heavenly and Earthly Four Gods) interact?

Sugiwara: Yes. Due to narrative requirements, interactions among the Heavenly and Earthly Four Gods are naturally frequent. Additionally, we plan to delve deeper into relationships between historically connected figures.

4Gamer:
The graphics at Ryugū base are also stunning—really beautiful.

Sugiwara:
Thank you! We focused not only on the beauty of a watery city but also on creating a space where players can relax, feel healed, and experience heart-fluttering moments.

4Gamer:
When you’re at the base, tapping fish produces hearts—did you know?

Sugiwara:
We’re really glad you noticed! That’s one of our team’s core touches—we wanted players to grow fond of the fish too.

Egawa:
Exactly. We’ve included aquarium elements for a touch of relaxation and comfort—you can enjoy it casually during downtime.

4Gamer:
The music is also fantastic.

Egawa:
Music has always been an essential part of shaping the world in “Haruka” series. Music often stirs deep emotions. Since this story itself is highly dramatic, we asked our composers to create melodies that are both melodic and emotionally powerful—perfectly matching the narrative’s tone.

The result truly matches our ideal vision.

Sugiwara:
Since we travel across multiple worlds, each with its own distinct atmosphere, we’ve tailored music accordingly. For example, at Ryugū base, harps evoke water; in Heian-era scenes, shō (a mouth organ); during Sengoku era segments, shakuhachi—each using instruments fitting the period. We hope players can truly feel each world through these unique sounds.

Delving Deeper into Romantic Elements: Friend Routes, “Spirit Injection,” and More!

4Gamer:
What are the standout features of this title?

Sugiwara:
The biggest highlight is “Dual Romance.” Of course, you’ll enjoy romance in historically inspired alternate worlds—but we’ve also included deep daily interactions at Ryugū. It’s like doubling your romantic content—offering a rich and satisfying love experience.

4Gamer:
This game isn’t just about romance—it also allows players to remain friends with Eight Leaves instead of pursuing relationships?

Sugiwara: Yes. Players can choose between being lovers bound by affection, or close companions built on deep bonds—it’s up to your personal style. Whether you want one character as a romantic partner while keeping another as a close friend, that kind of flexibility is fully supported.

4Gamer:
With so many wonderful characters, the friendship route stories are also intriguing.

Sugiwara: Thank you! Even in the companion route, we’ve ensured players can enjoy a weighty story set across alternate worlds—so please look forward to it. Moreover, once you’ve established a romantic relationship, you can freely switch between “lover” and “companion” status at any time.

Depending on your chosen relationship in the Ryugū section, how characters interact with you may change too—please do try this feature out!

4Gamer:
That’s wonderful for those who want both. Another exciting feature is “Spirit Injection”—a thrilling moment that instantly brings players closer to their Eight Leaves. What inspired its inclusion?

Egawa: It was a system the whole development team poured their hearts into (laughing).

Sugiwara: Exactly—we really gave it our all (laughing). Since smartphones are touch-based, and touching means interaction—why not go bold? So we integrated touch actions during interactions, adding physical affection to deepen intimacy. We wanted players to enjoy sweet exchanges from the very start.

It’s a challenging step for the “Haruka” series—but one we’re proud of.

Egawa: It’s quite a sugary system even among Neo-Romance titles. Before implementation, I had already asked for “since the God is an adult woman, please include some sweet event CGs.” But when they mentioned “Spirit Injection,” I honestly thought, “Is this really okay?” (laughing).
But once we saw the final result—truly amazing! Especially with details like eye positioning—I ended up getting quite passionate about checking it myself (laughing).

Sugiwara: Indeed. After Egawa’s meticulous review, scene beauty and emotional depth improved dramatically (laughing). We aimed for that bolder sense of excitement while carefully preserving the world and mood central to “Haruka.” So please rest assured—this balance was maintained.

Egawa: It’s always about elegant sensuality, after all.

4Gamer:
It’s fun how each Eight Leaf reacts differently depending on your relationship—really adds depth!

Sugiwara: Thank you. We’ve carefully crafted the characters’ personalities to encourage deep engagement—please enjoy them fully.

Thumbnail image No.025 / [Interview] A New “Haruka” After 25 Years — Developers Speak of Their Deep Feelings and Romance Packed Into This Masterpiece Thumbnail image No.026 / [Interview] A New “Haruka” After 25 Years — Developers Speak of Their Deep Feelings and Romance Packed Into This Masterpiece

4Gamer:
Another much-anticipated feature is “Co-Sleeping”—a very everyday, intimate content.

Egawa: Yes. We wanted players to feel the experience of “being together 24 hours a day with your beloved.” Even when not actively playing, we wanted that feeling to linger. When someone suggested adding a “sleep mode” where you can sleep alongside an Eight Leaf, it felt truly wonderful.

We aim for a seamless journey—from morning greetings and goodnight wishes all the way to “one more good morning”—where you’re always together.

4Gamer:
The vertical screen format really complements the “co-sleeping” mode.

Sugiwara: Yes. We recommend placing your phone by your bedside at night. After a while, you’ll hear gentle breathing from your Eight Leaf—and if you tap lightly, they’ll wake up and respond. We hope players enjoy this realistic sense of closeness.

4Gamer:
Are there different types of snoring or even dream talk?

Sugiwara: Yes—there are several types of snoring, and we plan to add dream talk in future updates. Players will be able to enjoy various patterns over time.

4Gamer:
In the early stages (tutorial), players can choose from three characters: Taira Kiyomori, Date Masamune, and Hijikata Zōshin. Why these three?

Sugiwara: First, we wanted three with distinct personalities. Second, to clearly signal that this is a new timeline separate from past entries, we intentionally included Kiyomori—someone who shares the name of a character from previous games. This reinforces the idea: “Both timelines matter.”

Additionally, Date Masamune and Hijikata Zōshin are historically famous figures—their names help players easily imagine their personalities.

4Gamer:
Battles remain one of the familiar elements in this series. What’s new about the card battle system here?

Sugiwara: One major highlight is beautifully illustrated cards—we wanted to make full use of these visuals in battles, leading us to develop a lightweight yet exhilarating card battle system that fits modern lifestyles.

A key feature is our unique special move: “Divine Descent.” It’s recommended to trigger it casually just to enjoy your favorite character’s heroic moment—but strategically planning when and which character to invoke can also be deeply engaging. We encourage players to tailor their approach based on personal style.

Thumbnail image No.019 / [Interview] A New “Haruka” After 25 Years — Developers Speak of Their Deep Feelings and Romance Packed Into This Masterpiece Thumbnail image No.018 / [Interview] A New “Haruka” After 25 Years — Developers Speak of Their Deep Feelings and Romance Packed Into This Masterpiece

Egawa:
Additionally, the game features elemental compatibility based on the Five Elements (Wu Xing). You can take your time to carefully build teams—or if it feels too complicated, use auto-formation or skip functions. The battle system is designed for easy play through auto-battle—so feel free to enjoy without stress.

4Gamer:
Speaking of cards, the aquatic spirits appearing at Ryugū base are another fun feature.

Egawa: Honestly, I initially thought, “Can aquatic spirits really be allies?” (laughing). I wasn’t sure if there’d even be demand. But once we saw the artwork—so incredibly cute—that changed everything instantly.

Also, these aquatic spirits serve as material for Eight Leaves’ development, so they’re not just visually appealing—they’re also highly practical.

Sugiwara: The aquatic spirits appear in Ryugū’s story and map—and post on “Kawaraban,” a bulletin board system within the game. We hope players grow fond of them, both as characters and cards.

4Gamer:
This title also incorporates elements from “idle games,” where items are obtained over time.

Sugiwara: Yes. To keep focus on romance and story during playtime, we’ve offloaded potentially burdensome tasks into idle game mechanics.

For example, necessary development materials are automatically acquired over time. Even when you’re not actively playing, the Eight Leaves complete requests or craft equipment for you. We designed it so players can still feel their affection—even when they’re not looking at the screen.

4Gamer:
In the scope of what you can share, could you talk about future plans?

Egawa: First, we plan to participate in “Animate Girls Festival 2025,” scheduled for November 8–9. We’ll have both a booth and stage events—special programs are planned at the venue, with live streaming available too. Please look forward to it.

Additionally, right now Haruka Naku Toka no Naka de 7 and other titles in the series are on sale for Nintendo Switch. Whether you’ve never played before or are thinking of returning after a long break—this is the perfect chance to pick one up!

4Gamer:
Finally, any message for current fans—and those who will become new gods?

Sugiwara: First, thank you so much to everyone who has always supported us. Your support is what made it possible to continue creating “Haruka” even after 25 years.

To those who haven’t played before—thank you for reading this far. We’re truly happy that you’re interested in our new title.

Also, on this occasion, I’d like to express my gratitude to everyone involved with the series over the years—from Ms. Junko Mizuno and all past cast members to the new illustrators and voice actors who joined us now.

I’ve been a fan of the “Haruka” series since my student days. Since joining the team, I’ve learned so much from senior staff and fans alike. As such an important title, launching this new direction came with great pressure—something every team member shared deeply.

We wanted to deliver “Haruka’s unique romance” to everyone who loves the franchise—and also to those discovering it for the first time. Through countless discussions, we arrived at this final result. While form and setting may differ from past entries, we’ve poured our hearts into ensuring players can still feel “Haruka’s soul.” We’d be truly honored if you give it a try.

Egawa:
In previous interviews, fans often asked, “When will the new title come?” I could only ever reply, “We’re working hard.”
After countless rounds of scrapping and rebuilding—trying different approaches for three years—we’ve finally reached the point where we can share this with you. It fills me with joy.

Thanks to your unwavering support over so many years, we were able to create this new title. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

This game isn’t a numbered sequel—it’s the start of an entirely new series. Born out of all that came before it, we aim to cherish and expand upon the legacy of “Haruka.” Whether you’re long-time fans or newcomers—we’ll do our best so both groups can enjoy it equally.

The Neo-Romance series is made with the intention of adding color to everyday life. When you’re tired, need healing, or seek excitement—our hope is that this title brings a little spark into your daily routine.

We aim to keep “Haruka Naku Toka no Naka de” going for 30th and even 35th anniversaries. We’d be truly happy if both the original series and our new “God of Ryugū” receive your continued support. Thank you so much.

4Gamer:
Thank you very much.
