On September 26, 2025, a premiere event for the latest installment of the iconic spy-action franchise “007,” titled “007 First Light” (available on PC / PS5 / Xbox Series X|S / Nintendo Switch 2), was held at United Cinemas Makuhari, located near the venue of Tokyo Game Show 2025.
Centered around a live gameplay demonstration presented with the atmosphere of a movie world premiere, we bring you an exclusive report from the event.
A special showcase presented with a large screen and powerful sound effects instantly transported the gathered media professionals and fans into Bond’s world. The highlight of the event was a first-ever real machine demonstration. On screen, an upscale hotel stood in Slovakia’s High Tatra Mountains—set against the backdrop of a secret mission unfolding during the International Chess Championship. Players take on the role of young James Bond as he undertakes this covert operation.
Notably, this mission is the same one revealed during the official launch date announcement in “Gameplay Reveal.” The event offered a unique experience: playing through it live and receiving real-time commentary.
At this stage, Bond is still undergoing training. Thus, his role in this opening mission is limited to that of a driver transporting allies. Emphasizing this moment as the starting point of Bond’s journey, developers highlighted how this young, inexperienced man would grow from a simple chauffeur into a true spy.
During the actual gameplay, players were introduced to a method of infiltrating the hotel: Bond uses a lighter to set fire to fallen leaves, distracting security guards and gaining entry. The developers emphasized that this was just one example—players can discover alternative approaches through eavesdropping, disguises, or other means. It’s striking how IO Interactive’s hallmark design philosophy emphasizing freedom has been seamlessly integrated into the 007 universe.

Also unveiled was the series’ familiar spy gadget—the “Q Watch.” This wristwatch scans surroundings and identifies infiltration opportunities, becoming a reliable ally for players. The development team explained that analyzing environments to choose appropriate tactics is key, inviting audience members to imagine: “How would I act in this situation?”
When the scene shifted, a classic 007-style car chase unfolded on screen. With roaring engines and intense pursuit sequences, the audience reacted with spontaneous murmurs of excitement. The developers stated their primary focus during design was creating danger and thrill—above all, ensuring fun—highlighting their dedication to delivering that long-anticipated cinematic experience within gameplay.

Combat mechanics were also introduced. The game features seamless 360-degree action that allows players to fluidly switch between close-quarters combat and long-range gunfire, enabling them to freely choose their style based on the situation. Even in scenes that appear linear at first glance, multiple approaches are always available—the choice of path is entirely up to the player.
At the end of the gameplay demo, the development team reaffirmed their vision: “Our goal with ‘007 First Light’ is to deliver the ultimate spy-action adventure.” With espionage-driven infiltration sequences, cinematic action worthy of a blockbuster film, and IO Interactive’s signature freedom in gameplay—everything converges into one powerful story that brings Bond’s new journey vividly to life.
Finally, here are the Q&A session highlights:
— “007 First Light” is the first Bond game since 2012. Why did IO Interactive choose James Bond as its next direction?
Martin Emborg:
Everyone wants to create something like this, and for us, it felt like a natural evolution. Depicting young Bond allows us to tell emotionally charged, thrilling stories—letting players experience the shadowy world of espionage alongside him.
— How does your creative approach differ from “Hitman”?
Martin Emborg:
This is a character-driven action-adventure with a different design philosophy than “Hitman.” We’ve enhanced our proprietary engine “Glacier” and brought in new talent to fully capture Bond’s unique charm and chaotic flair.
— How do you balance gameplay, narrative, and cinematic elements?
Martin Emborg:
Gameplay breathes—it expands and contracts. There are social infiltration segments as well as moments of intense focus like a chase. The key difference is that Bond always carries an underlying tension, akin to a ticking time bomb. Problems must be resolved immediately, and this urgency drives the story forward.

— Why was “First Light” chosen as the title?
Martin Emborg:
Light and shadow are central themes in Bond’s story. In this narrative, young Bond takes his first step into the light, entering the world of espionage. Yet it’s not a black-and-white world—it’s one filled with gray areas. This is where he begins to understand what it truly means to be a real agent.
— After 13 years since the last title, how did this project begin, and why partner with IO Interactive?
Matt Group:
IO Interactive has deep understanding and experience in “agent fantasy,” making them ideal for bringing a genuine Bond experience to life. By combining their expertise from “Hitman” with our own strengths, we were able to realize this project.
— Does it feature replayability and freedom similar to “Hitman”?
Martin Emborg:
While the design differs from “Hitman,” players still have the freedom to approach missions in their own way. Changing stealth tactics or gadget usage leads to different experiences upon replay. Additionally, we’ve included many spectacular moments—like the airplane scene—that you’ll want to enjoy again and again.
— Are there easter eggs or hidden details?
Laureen Deschamps:
Of course! But what they are remains a secret. We’d love players to discover them on their own. There are plenty of fun surprises for dedicated Bond fans.
