Organized by the Sapporo Game Camp Executive Committee, with participation from Sapporo City and local game companies (Executive Director: Takaya Seikawa, Sega Sapporo Studio Co., Ltd.), “Sapporo Game Camp 2025” (SGC2025) was held from October 17 to 19. Aimed at nurturing game creators in Sapporo and further promoting digital entertainment, this year’s fourth edition saw participation from 15 local game companies as operational partners, with total attendance reaching approximately 1,900 over three days. Additionally, the main program “Game Jam” attracted 160 participants including professional staff—making it one of the largest such events in Japan.

Talk Sessions: “Professionals Speak: The Past and Future” (Totaling 10 Sessions)
On the event’s first day, a series of talk sessions were held featuring active and veteran creators from Sapporo. These sessions delivered career advice and insights into game development behind-the-scenes to around 1,400 aspiring students.

Keynote Speech: “The Power to Create Something from Nothing”
To close the talk sessions, a special keynote speech featured two legendary creators at the forefront of Sapporo and Japanese game development. Moderator Ryōji Takebe, founder and CEO of Rocket Studio (formerly of Hudson), hosted a unique one-night-only conversation with Koji Iwamoto—the “father” of the Mega Man series—sharing insights on mindset for working in the gaming industry.

Game Creation Practice Centered Around “Cockatoo” – Game Jam
As SGC’s main program, the “Game Jam” brought together approximately 160 participants including professional creators and students from schools inside and outside Sapporo. Participants formed 20 temporary teams to develop games under a time-limited schedule of two days. The theme this year was “Cockatoo.” Each team interpreted the theme uniquely, resulting in 20 distinctive game creations.

Programming Workshop Using “Puyo Puyo” Source Code

On the second day, a “Puyo Puyo Programming Workshop” was held using JavaScript source code from Sega’s popular action puzzle game, Puyo Puyo. Around 50 participants ranging from elementary to high school students joined. The workshop was led by Piponai, a Japan Esports Association-certified professional Puyo Puyo player and former systems engineer, who guided attendees through hands-on coding—copying code from the original game and writing scripts to customize background visuals—tailored to each participant’s skill level.

Play Pre-Release Games! “Sonic Rumble 1-Day Mini Esports Tournament”

Additionally, this year introduced a new program: an esports tournament using Sonic Rumble, a party royale game based on the globally popular Sonic series set for release in November 2025 across mobile and PC platforms. Over 60 participants—from elementary school students to working adults—enjoyed large-scale multiplayer battles, typical of party games.

Learn the Fundamentals of Design: “Introduction to CG Course”

On the final day of SGC, an “Introduction to CG Course” was held to teach foundational 3D computer graphics (CG) design skills essential for game development. Around 70 participants ranging from elementary school first graders to high school students joined five sessions. Using pre-prepared “ghost” models, attendees created items and adjusted character sizes through hands-on 3D modeling exercises. Participants listened attentively to instructors and actively raised their hands during lessons—making the experience both engaging and educational under staff support.

Corporate Booths Connecting Directly with Sapporo’s Game Industry

On the first day of SGC2025, corporate booths were again held to directly connect local companies based in Sapporo with students. Ten game-related companies from within the city set up exhibition stands. Alongside company introductions, each booth hosted portfolio reviews, job counseling sessions, and Q&A corners—offering participants aspiring to enter the industry a valuable opportunity for direct interaction with professionals.

Sapporo City hosts around 70 companies specializing in game development, CG animation, and other content creation. In recent years, new company entries have accelerated. Furthermore, an international esports tournament was held in January 2025, with Sapporo confirmed as the host city for events in both 2026 and 2027. The Sapporo Game Camp Executive Committee—founded in 2022 by Sapporo City and game development companies based in the city—was established to nurture local game creators and further promote digital entertainment. Since its inception, the committee has hosted “Sapporo Game Camp” annually, and since 2023 it has continued running “Portfolio Review Events”—connecting students with companies and actively contributing to boosting Sapporo’s, and Hokkaido’s broader, entertainment scene.
