Hello everyone, welcome to 4Gamer! I’m cooking entertainer Tetsuya Oonishi.
Welcome back to “My Collaboration Café,” where professional chefs go all-out to recreate and verify in-game dishes—either seriously or with their own creative twists. Let’s make this month another great one!

This time, our theme is [The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom], affectionately known as “TearKing.”
While many thought it impossible to surpass its predecessor, Breath of the Wild, upon release, this game has since earned praise such as a “masterpiece for history” and even an “upgrade over a god-tier title”—an absolutely astonishing achievement.

The story has received acclaim as the best in series history, while gameplay has been further refined with greatly enhanced freedom. The map now features a three-layer structure—sky, surface, and underground—increasing exploration freedom by over threefold. New abilities like “Ultrahand,” “Modrekko,” “Tōrēroof,” and “Scrabuild” have opened up infinite possibilities in both progression and playstyle. Puzzle-solving and combat now hinge entirely on creativity, making each player’s experience dramatically different—truly remarkable.

Despite introducing so many new elements, the game’s controls and comfort level have also seen significant improvements—no wonder it has earned such high praise.

Additionally, on June 5, 2025, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo Switch 2 Edition was released. Players with a Switch version can upgrade via either an “Upgrade Pass” or by joining “Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.” The Switch 2’s enhanced performance brings higher resolution and frame rate, HDR support, shorter load times, double save slots, and even access to the smartphone companion service “ZELDA NOTES”—a major power-up. Particularly helpful for completionists: the second save slot.

And of course, when it comes to TearKing, food plays a vital role too. Our hero Link cooks up just about anything he can find during his adventure—animals, fish, mushrooms, and even suspicious-looking extracts or lumps. Over 200 different recipes exist! It’s practically a cooking game in its own right.

Since Halloween is approaching, this time we’ll recreate “Monsters’ Soup.”

The name alone sounds eerie—but I’ll investigate seriously: Is it actually delicious? And how would you make it in real life?

For ingredients, I’ve selected “Shadow Queen”—a purple potato with anthocyanin pigments. Though its appearance is quite sinister, the taste is excellent—truly a variety tailor-made for “Monsters’ Soup.”

Let’s begin making Monsters’ Soup using this Shadow Queen!

■ Ingredients (for 2 servings)
Potatoes (Shadow Queen): 100g
Green onions (white part only): 75g
Onion: 50g
Butter: 15g
Chicken bouillon: 3g
Water: 150ml
Milk: 150ml
Heavy cream: 75ml
Salt: a pinch
Black pepper: a pinch
Nutmeg: a pinch
Parsley: a small amount (for garnish)

Peel and cut potatoes into 1–2 cm thick slices. Cut green onions diagonally, and slice the onion thinly along the fiber direction. Image Gallery No.002 thumbnail / Spicing up Halloween with “Monsters’ Soup” from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. My Collaboration Café: Menu 081

Melt butter in a frying pan, then gently sauté green onions, onion, and a pinch of salt over low heat—avoid browning. Image Gallery No.003 thumbnail / Spicing up Halloween with “Monsters’ Soup” from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. My Collaboration Café: Menu 081

Once onions soften, add potatoes and another pinch of salt; continue sautéing. Image Gallery No.004 thumbnail / Spicing up Halloween with “Monsters’ Soup” from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. My Collaboration Café: Menu 081

When potato surfaces begin to look translucent, add bouillon and water. Simmer until potatoes are soft enough to break apart easily with chopsticks. Let cool slightly, then blend smoothly using a blender or food processor. Image Gallery No.006 thumbnail / Spicing up Halloween with “Monsters’ Soup” from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. My Collaboration Café: Menu 081

Return to pot, stir in milk and heavy cream. Adjust seasoning with salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Image Gallery No.007 thumbnail / Spicing up Halloween with “Monsters’ Soup” from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. My Collaboration Café: Menu 081

Serve in bowls, top with leftover heavy cream and parsley—finished!

First Taste

Visually, it’s quite strikingly ominous—but the aroma is completely that of a classic French-style vegetable soup. The first sip reveals smooth, rich umami far beyond what you’d expect from its purple hue. The natural sweetness of the potato blends beautifully with the savory notes of green onion and onion, all wrapped in butter and heavy cream. The contrast between appearance and taste delivers a powerful emotional punch—truly delightful.

By the way, Shadow Queen potatoes aren’t mandatory—you can use regular potatoes or sweet potatoes instead.

How did you like this theme? If you found it interesting—or actually tried making it—I’d love to see your posts on social media using hashtags like “#MyCollaborationCafe” and “#COCOCORO.”

Until next time—see you soon! See ya!

Sometimes I’m a cooking researcher, sometimes a YouTuber on the “COCOCORO Channel”—but in truth, my mission is simple: bringing joy to people through food! By the way, this Shadow Queen potato may look like something from a monster realm—but its flavor and aroma are absolutely royal-class. If you ever see it, give it a try! Next time, why not try making those “Rizalfo’s Tail Skewers”?
